# Tracking Certification Status & Milestones

The enrollment grid provides a real-time view of every crew member's certification status and upcoming compliance obligations.

### Enrollment Grid Columns

| Column                     | What It Shows                                          |
| -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| Crew Member                | Full name                                              |
| Position                   | Crew position from the crew record                     |
| Cert Type                  | Part 240, Part 242, or Part 243                        |
| Status                     | Current certification status                           |
| Certified Date             | Date certified under this program                      |
| Expires Date               | Certification expiry — 36 months default               |
| Knowledge Exam             | Knowledge examination completion date                  |
| Skills Test                | Skills performance test completion date                |
| Annual Monitoring Due      | Deadline for annual operational monitoring observation |
| Annual Compliance Test Due | Deadline for annual unannounced compliance test        |

### Certification Status Guide

| Status          | Color | Meaning                                        |
| --------------- | ----- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| Pending         | Gray  | Enrolled but not yet certified                 |
| Active          | Green | Currently certified within the 36-month window |
| Due for Renewal | Amber | Expires within 90 days — action required       |
| Lapsed          | Red   | Certification has expired                      |
| Revoked         | Red   | Certification has been revoked                 |

### Updating Milestones

Click any enrollment row to open the inline milestone editor to record knowledge exam scores, skills test results, operational monitoring observations, compliance test results, and return-to-service requirements.

### Annual Requirements

Under 49 CFR §240.129, each certified locomotive engineer must receive at least one operational monitoring observation and one unannounced compliance test per calendar year. RailCert tracks both deadlines in the enrollment grid.

### Recertification

When status changes to Due for Renewal, complete your recertification process then update the Certified Date and Expires Date in the milestone editor to reflect the new 36-month interval.
