# How to Clock In and Out

The HoS Clock In/Out widget on your Today dashboard is your primary tool for logging on and off duty. Railnology uses your clock-in and clock-out times to calculate your cumulative duty time and enforce applicable HoS limits.

### Clock In

1. Navigate to **Today** in the left sidebar.
2. In the **HoS Clock In/Out** widget, click **Clock In**.
3. A duty type modal appears. Select your duty type:
   * **Freight**
   * **Passenger**
   * **Yard**
   * **Other**
4. Confirm your selection. Freight is the default.

Your status updates to **On Duty** and your duty timer begins.

### Clock Out

1. In the **HoS Clock In/Out** widget, click **Clock Out**.
2. Confirm the action.

Your status updates to **Clocked Out**. Railnology calculates your total duty time for the service window.

### Widget States

The HoS widget moves through five states in sequence:

| State           | Meaning                                                  |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Off Duty** | Not in covered service |
| **On Duty** | Currently performing covered service — duty timer active |
| **Clocked Out** | Duty ended — rest period begins |
| **Resting** | In mandatory rest period |
| **Off Duty** | Rest period complete — available for service |
