# Understanding Hours of Service in Railnology

Hours of Service (HoS) rules govern how long railroad employees can perform covered service before they are required to take mandatory rest. Railnology tracks HoS automatically for your crew based on your organization's jurisdiction and the applicable regulatory framework.

### Applicable Regulations

### What Railnology Tracks

For each crew member performing covered service, Railnology tracks:

* Clock-in and clock-out times
* Total time on duty in the current service window
* Time until the applicable duty limit is reached
* Mandatory rest periods required after duty

### Alerts

Railnology sends automated alerts when a crew member is approaching or has exceeded their duty limit. Alerts appear in the HoS Alert Feed on the Today dashboard and are sent by email. Alert thresholds are set by the applicable regulation for your jurisdiction.

> **Note:** ARTF cumulative Hours of Service limits are pending final confirmation from the regulatory authority. Until confirmed, Railnology displays an amber warning on HoS records for ARTF organizations. Individual shift limits apply normally.
