# Understanding HoS Alerts

Railnology generates HoS alerts automatically when duty limits are approached or exceeded. These alerts are designed to keep your organization ahead of compliance issues before they become reportable events.

### Alert Types

**Approaching Limit** — generated when a crew member's cumulative duty time is nearing the applicable regulatory limit. The threshold is set by the applicable regulation for your jurisdiction.

**Over Limit** — generated when a crew member has exceeded the applicable duty limit. This is a compliance event that requires attention and may require FRA Form 6180.3 reporting under 49 CFR §228.19.

### Where Alerts Appear

* **Today dashboard** — the HoS Alert Feed shows all active alerts for your organization
* **Email** — alert notifications are sent to the affected crew member and their supervisor
* **Notification bell** — unread alert count shown in the top navigation bar

### Alert Behavior

HoS alerts cannot be disabled. The alert banner on the Today dashboard remains visible until the underlying condition is resolved — either by the crew member completing mandatory rest or a supervisor taking remediation action.
