# Understanding Raillie's Response Modes

Raillie can operate in two response modes, configurable by your Org Admin from the Knowledge Base configuration settings.

### Literal Mode

Provides direct answers drawn strictly from the knowledge source. Opinion-free — Raillie reports what the document says without additional reasoning or interpretation.

Best for: looking up specific rule text, confirming exact regulatory language, or situations where you need a direct citation without analysis.

### Reasoning Mode

Provides AI-reasoned responses with citations. Raillie reasons through the question using the knowledge source and explains its conclusions clearly.

Best for: understanding how a rule applies to a specific situation, comparing rules across scenarios, or getting actionable guidance rather than raw text.

The active response mode is set by your Org Admin. If you are an independent user, the default is Reasoning Mode.
