# Understanding Your Crew Role

In Railnology, your access and how your Hours of Service is tracked are governed by two separate but related assignments made by your Org Admin.

### Layer 1 — Platform Role

Your platform role controls what you can see and do inside Railnology. It governs access to administrative tools, compliance records, reporting features, and settings. The six current platform roles are: Administrator, Train Master, Dispatcher, Operations Planner, Safety Officer, and Crew Member.

### Layer 2 — Crew Position

Your crew position controls how your Hours of Service is tracked and how you appear in crew management. It reflects your operational duties on the railroad and determines which HoS rule set applies to your duty time under your organization's jurisdiction.

### How They Work Together

Your platform role and crew position are assigned together by your Org Admin from the Team tab. A user can have a platform role without a crew position — for example, an Administrator who performs no regulated service. Users assigned Train Master, Dispatcher, or Crew Member platform roles will typically also have a crew position assigned.

> **Note:** If you believe your platform role or crew position is incorrect, contact your Org Admin. These assignments are managed from the Team tab in Org Admin and can be updated at any time.
